The apostle Paul emphasised this idea in his letter to the Corinthians: "Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?" (1 Corinthians 3:16, KJV). This teaching reinforces that each believer's body and soul should be kept pure, aligning with Jesus' act of cleansing the Temple, as a call for ongoing spiritual renewal and moral transformation within each individual.
Therefore, in my humble view, it is symbolic of internal cleansing.
Many Christian thinkers interpret this event as a metaphor for the inner cleansing that every believer must experience. Just as Jesus cleared out what was impure in the physical temple, Christians are called to confront and remove impurity, hypocrisy, greed, and sin from their own lives, making space for authentic faith and the presence of the Divine within.
