Advent: The Coming Kingdom

Devotional Covenant and Doctrine 20 December 2019

Over the past nineteen days, our devotions have centred on the person of Jesus — His dual nature as both human and Divine, the reason for His coming into this world, and the purpose He fulfilled in doing so. We have also spoken of His second coming. Today let us reinforce our faith in that second coming, and in what it holds for us.

When our wonderful Saviour comes again, He will judge the world with wisdom, justice, and righteousness — not as the world judges, for human judgement is always, in some measure, biased. He will not look upon caste, creed, or colour. He has but one interest: to save His people. All that is unjust He will banish, for nothing impure can stand before His throne. He will put an end to the works of evil, the sting of sin, and the pain of injustice — none of these belongs in His Kingdom, His new creation.

When Christ returns, He will put an end to all evil, and we shall echo the words of the multitude in Heaven: "Salvation, and glory, and honour, and power, unto the Lord our God: for true and righteous are His judgments: for He hath judged the great whore, which did corrupt the earth with her fornication, and hath avenged the blood of His servants at her hand" (Revelation 19:1-2).

When our wonderful Saviour ushers in His eternal Kingdom, we shall live for ever under His just and wise reign, and we shall be made like Him. "Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when He shall appear, we shall be like Him; for we shall see Him as He is" (1 John 3:2) — a profound truth. We cannot begin to imagine how we shall be changed, when He so much as glances upon us.

As we lose ourselves in the festivities marking His first coming, let us remind ourselves that the matter does not end there. Let us tell our children, and all those not yet reached, that Father Christmas is not the reason for our celebration. There was no jingling of bells when God came into this world, unannounced and without fanfare. We rejoice at Good Friday and at Easter Sunday, and both point us to what it will be when He comes again to take us to His Kingdom.

Praise to our wonderful Saviour, perfectly wise! Praise to our wonderful Saviour, who will redeem all things! Let us seek His counsel now, until we see Him face to face one day.
